Tame Your Winter Blahs with Aromatherapy

Winter may be upon us, but aromatherapy can make even the coldest nights more comforting.

There are so many ways to use essential oils, creating your own body care products is one of them. Here's a bend to sooth you this cold and flu season. It's a simple and relaxing body rubbing oil made with grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, and eucalyptus and lavender essential oil. Because essential oils are highly concentrated, they must be diluted in a carrier product like skin care oil, water, unscented lotion, or unscented liquid soap. Follow this recipe for safe, effective use.

Main Essential Oils in Recipe

Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus) is one of the most popular essential oils and it’s easy-to-use and very effective. Eucalyptus leaves have a naturally sweet aroma but through proper distillation, the essential oil becomes brisk and camphoraceous. Used in aromatherapy, the cooling and healing scent of Eucalyptus Essential Oil is known to relieve mental exhaustion by boosting circulation, stimulating the mind out of sluggishness and rejuvenating the spirit. Those suffering from sinus congestion or sinus tension that causes headaches can diffuse Eucalyptus Essential Oil to clear nasal passages and to eliminate harmful airborne bacteria.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) is another one of the most popular essential oil and is widely recognized for its aroma and many uses. It is generally considered one of the safest oils to use for adults and children, and scientific studies over the years have verified its many benefits. Lavender is well known for its calming and relaxing effects. It's ideal for adults and children and can be applied topically or diffused in the air. It is commonly used in pillow sprays, personal care products, and bath blends. On the skin, lavender is soothing and cleansing. Because it's so mild, it finds its way in many products for facial care and in DIY facial recipes. When used in aromatherapy, this mild sedative is reputed to reduce stress by relaxing the brain waves, which is also said to reduce cortisol levels that contribute to the stress hormone. Due to its calming and relaxing properties, it can work as a sleep aid for those suffering from insomnia.
