New Moon Ritual for April

by Susan K. Edwards, Licensed Spiritual Healer-Coach,

New moons are the perfect time to set intentions for new beginnings. Think paying attention to the power of the phases of the Moon is a bunch of New Age hooey? You may want to think again.

Ask the engineers trying to free the 200,000-ton ship, Evergreen, that got stuck for almost a week in the Suez Canal last month what they think about the power of the phases of the moon!

“The salvage team pinned their hopes on this week’s full moon, when, beginning Sunday, water levels were set to rise a foot-and-a-half higher-than-normal high tides,” reported The Wall Street Journal.

The Evergreen is a mammoth ship that can carry 20,000 20-foot containers and is 1,312-foot long. After 6-days of non-stop efforts from the best engineers and scientist from around the world, the final ingredient in freeing the behemoth was March’s full Moon. Luckily for the salvage team, March had a “supermoon” – when a full Moon occurs at its closest point to Earth, coupled with a full Moon, where the alignment of the Sun also leads to more extreme tides. The tides were about 18” above normal and that was enough to free the ship and reopen the Suez Cana

Humans have been harnessing the power of the Moon ever since they first looked upward and saw it in our sky. And with good reason. It’s powerful influence on the rhythms of life on this planet.

First let’s define what is a new Moon? A new Moon marks the beginning of a lunar cycle. It occurs about once a month, and is when the Sun and Moon are aligned, on opposite sides of the Earth. During this phase it is not being illuminated by the Sun, which makes the Moon blend in with the dark night sky, and it appears we have no Moon.

Things to Do During A New Moon Ceremony

The new moon is the perfect time to set intentions, launch new projects and focus on new beginnings. Connecting to these lunar energies can provide grounding and a sense of direction. Here are some ideas to kick-start your month.

One of my favorite ceremonies is to light an intention candle.

Get quiet. Pray or meditate on your intention. Write out your intention. Use a statement the reflects your desire as if it is already in your life. Use clear, positive phrases. Something like, “I am so grateful for the abundance in my life.” I am relieved that my healing has taken place.” “I enjoy loving and empowering relationships.”

Light your candle and repeat your affirmation or intention while gazing at the flame. Using your imagination, see your prayer or affirmation rising up and being carried to (God, the Universe, Source…) and being answered. Extinguish your candle knowing your prayers have been heard.

Some other things to do could include making a journal entry about what you want to accomplish this month. Be specific. Start a new friendship. Try a new food. Do a bit of Spring cleaning. Take time for YOU!

Be creative. This is a great time to harness the power of the new Moon and move whatever has been “stuck” in your life out of the way.
